Philippine government to exhume corpse alleged to be casino employee

Estrada plot thickens and government officials implicated in killing

The Philippine government is planning to dig up a corpse in Bacalor in Pampanga. Justice Secretary Hernando Perez announced that government operatives planned to confirm a former civilian agent's claims that the body of a former casino employee was buried there.

The government decided to verify the allegation of Angelo Mawanay, ex-agent of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force, that Edgar Bentain, an employee of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp was buried alive in Bacolor soon after exposing a videotape showing then Vice President Joseph Estrada gambling at a casino. The video was shown amid the 1998 presidential campaign.

According to Mawanay, the head of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force Panfilo Lacson, and new senator-elect, was involved in the killing. Lacson denies the allegations.

In light of the sensitivity of the issue, the government is looking for "physical corroborative evidence" to backup Mawanay’s story.
