Goodbye to the Greyhound

Shutdown not expected to affect Las Vegas casinos

Bus service, Greyhound Lines, joined the long list of casualties in the tourism industry following last month’s terrorist attacks. However, the shutdown is expected to have little impact on the already struggling Las Vegas casino market, according to observers and casino officials.

Las Vegas visitor numbers have dropped dramatically, particularly as half the city’s visitors fly to Las Vegas. Bus services are far less important as a means of transport for most visitors.

According to Andrew Zarnett, a gaming analyst with Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, other Nevada towns will be more hard hit by the shutdown, although it should not have a huge effect on the big players in the Las Vegas market. Greyhound and other bus services are far more crucial to other gambling locations such as Atlantic City. What is of more concern is the number of people afraid to travel after the incidents. Says Zarnett, “The importance or significance of today's tragedy isn't the effect of Greyhound shutting down, but the fear instilled among bus passengers, who might be afraid or reluctant to travel by bus after this incident.”

Zarnett remains optimistic. He believes that despite the horror of the attacks, people are not going to change their travel patterns on a long-term basis.
