The Net Extends its Web

Synergy between online and land-based casinos benefits all

According to Rod Smith of the Las Vegas Gaming Wire, Las Vegas operators claim that “the biggest threat to gaming industry operations in 2002 came from the Internet reservation wholesalers,” who booked 30% of the rooms used by Vegas visitors.

As people become more comfortable using the Internet for transactions, they are attracted to the online discount reservation sites for their hotel bookings and more. In addition, some of the biggest casino operators also now offer web sites.

However, others do not view the web as a threat. Rather, some experts claim that the Internet allows people to become more familiar with casino games and enables them to play for small amounts while they learn before they venture out in the land-based casinos. The end result is more land-based gambling, and of course the online industry benefits too.
