Promoting a felony
Indiana online gambling bill approved
A bill approved by the Senate's Economic Development and Technology Committee this week has made it a felony to promote illegal online gambling. The bill will now move to the Senate. Last year the Senate passed a similar bill, but it fizzled out in the House of Representatives.
The bill targets radio advertisers and Internet pop-up adds for online gambling sites.
According to the new bill, those who promote online gambling would be subject to a Class D felony conviction. Enforcement would fall to local prosecutors. It is unclear whether Internet Service providers that host the advertisements will be also liable under the law.
Although members of the Senate were not sure how the bill would be policed, it was passed unanimously. Said Senator David Ford, who proposed the bill, “I know enforcement may be difficult, but I think it's an effort we need to make.” The Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling and the American Family Association of Indiana supported the bill.
