Gamblers’ Limits – Packer sets limits to prevent overspending

Packer’s new online casino will help heavy-handed bettors restrain themselves

Kerry Packer’s PBL gambling subsidiary is planning to launch its casino web site early next year under a Tasmanian license. However, this is an online casino with a difference. Packer, who made the headlines this year when he was reported to have lost nearly US $30 million in a Las Vegas Casino, has invested millions of dollars in software to stop players from overspending.

In order to help players avoid the same fate, Packer has instituted overspending regulations such as:

Players will be required to nominate set limits on maximum losses and maximum playing time for games such as baccarat and blackjack. For example, players will only be allowed to play 50 hands of blackjack at US $2 a hand in one session, much less than Packer bets in one hand!

Players will nominate set breaks from games during play and if they self-exclude more than three times, they will be banned permanently.

There will also be a cooling-off periods of up to seven days for players who raise their nominated maximum bet.

PBL Gaming general manager of gaming and wagering, Wayne Jones, said the system would show wins and losses and playing times in order to keep the player informed of his/her position at all times. All wins would be paid in non-negotiable checks and paybacks into credit card accounts would be banned. Packer appears to be serious about stopping overspending when it comes to players at his online casino. The question is whether he has the same restraint for himself.
